Do you enjoy practicing immigration law and educating others about current issues? If so, then perhaps Staff Attorney for the Immigrant Coalition of Rhode Island (a position housed at Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island) is the place for you.

The Immigrant Coalition of Rhode Island is a collection of 35 local organizations who all work on various issues that impact immigrants. Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, a member agency, helps new arrivals and those with cultural and language barriers to achieve autonomy through education, employment services, refugee resettlement, family literacy, interpreting and translating, and citizenship and immigration services.

The Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing free or low cost immigration legal services primarily to indigent clients seeking asylum or deportation defense. The Staff Attorney will also collaborate with community organizations to provide education and trainings on immigration issues and will participate in RI Immigrant Coalition activities with member agencies in Rhode Island.

The candidate should have the following:
✓ Experience working in a nonprofit legal services setting
✓ Broad knowledge of immigration laws and policies in order to effectively evaluate clients’ legal status and benefit opportunities
✓ Experience giving presentations and educational workshops to diverse audiences on immigration issues
✓ Strong verbal and written skills — exemplary attention to detail required
✓ Positive values of integrity, accountability, reliability, and teamwork
✓ Excellent interpersonal communication skills (able to work well with others and possess patience, diplomacy, and tolerance when working with others)
✓ J.D. from ABA accredited law school — immigration study preferred
✓ Member in good standing of any state bar
✓ Minimum 3 years immigration legal services and immigration court experience preferred
✓ Experience providing trainings/professional development to non-attorneys and volunteers preferred
✓ Commitment to immigrant rights
✓ Bilingual in English and Spanish required
