Job Description:

 

POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Assistant, Culinary Arts (part-time, open pool)

 

DEPARTMENT: Business and Experiential Education

 

REPORTS TO: Faculty Department Chair, Culinary Arts

 

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Laboratory Assistant, Culinary Arts works during the Fall and Spring semesters and is a professional cook who helps in preparing instructional materials used during kitchen laboratory work. The Laboratory Assistant assists in the day-to-day operations of the Culinary Arts kitchen, following the procedures set forth by the Department Chair.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• Prepare recipes to be used as instructional materials or for culinary functions.

• Set-up kitchen equipment needed for recipe preparations during laboratory or function work.

• Maintain kitchen organization and cleanliness.

• Promote and ensure sanitation and safety among students during kitchen laboratory work.

• Assist in the instruction of kitchen laboratory work under faculty supervision.

• Conduct and maintain food inventory.

• Assist in administrative duties including, but not limited to: ordering supplies, assisting with various tasks related to the kitchen operations, filing documents, answering the phone, coordinating equipment maintenance, and preparing request for expenditures.

• Attend and complete all required training sessions and meetings.

• Submit electronic timesheet in Self Service Time & Attendance (SSTA) weekly, or paper timesheet, if required for payroll purposes.

• Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol’s core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.

• Focus on the Commonwealth’s Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

 

• Must have completed the first year of a culinary arts or baking and pastry program or possess a minimum of an Associate degree in culinary arts or closely related field from an accredited institution.

• Ability to work as a team in order to achieve a common goal.

• Ability to maintain food quality and integrity.

• Must be able to compute basic mathematical calculations.

• Ability to execute all basic cooking methods.

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which may include nights and weekends.

• Must be able to safely lift weight of at least 50 pounds.

• Effective communication skills and the ability to explain concepts to others clearly.

• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.

• The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

• COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: As of January 2022, candidates for employment should be aware that Community College students, faculty, and staff are required to be fully vaccinated. Accordingly, initial employment is dependent upon receipt and verification of full vaccination status records; details of how to fulfill vaccine record verification requirements will be provided during the hire and onboarding process.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Experience working with college students and/or the communities we serve.

• Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee must meet the physical demands and work environment of the position, which may include but is not limited to the ability to safely lift weight of at least 50 pounds. POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit, non-benefitted position, working up to 18.5 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters.

 

Laboratory Assistants, Culinary Arts are hired on an as needed basis.

 

STARTING DATE: Academic Year 2022 – 2023

 

SALARY: $17.91 per hour
