Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Career and Technical Instructor – Workplace English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

DEPARTMENT: Economic and Business Development – Business Solutions and Partnerships

REPORTS TO: Director of Business Solutions and Partnerships

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Career and Technical Instructor – Workplace ESOL will develop and deliver a contextualized ESOL curriculum for workplace employees. The Instructor will be responsible for creating lesson plans that are related to the needs of the employer in order to improve English language skills of ESOL students, help them thrive in the workplace, as well as prepare them for employment or further educational opportunities, among other functions.

Instructors are responsible for the overall operation and management of their classroom. Instructors are required to work with a Business Solutions and Partnerships team member to develop a course syllabus and complete all applicable course/program reports, as directed in the project scope of work and based on client requests. Instructors will work closely with the Bristol team member and client to capture student attendance, follow-up, and assessment. These positions will host training during business hours (Monday thru Friday between 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM) and may be done in face-to-face, hybrid, or online modalities dependent on client specifications. Trainings are typically held onsite at the client location within the service region of Bristol Community College, including but not limited to Attleboro, Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford.


• Contextualize curriculum to improve ESOL employees’ workplace communication.
• Communicate regularly with company personnel (i.e., supervisors and human resources) regarding student progress and outcomes.
• Develop, implement, and align curriculum with Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education (MA ELS).
• Integrate digital literacy into curriculum, including education
• Utilize educational software and equipment as warranted.
• Prepare and submit course syllabus and weekly lesson plans.
• Evaluate the performance of students through administration of cumulative assessments and submit progress reports.
• Participate in program development team meetings.
• Utilize effective instructional techniques to create a learning environment that consistently communicates high standards.
• Maintain accurate attendance records.
• Work closely with Bristol and client liaison on student attendance and assessment.
• Provide community and educational resources for employees and their family members.
• Encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills in the workplace.
• If requested, collaborate with company personnel to recruit and assess employees for Bristol’s ESOL classes.
• Submit weekly electronic timesheets that reflect the contracted hours spent on specific project(s).
• Complete required college employee trainings such as, but not limited to, Title IX, FERPA, Bloodborne Pathogens and Information Security.
• Focus on the Commonwealth’s Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
• Focus on customer service protocols when working with Bristol community members, including faculty, staff, and students.
• Perform other duties as assigned.




• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of two years of experience working with adult students from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds in an instructional setting.
• Minimum of two years of experience in ESOL teaching.
• Must have availability Monday through Friday between 7:00am to 6:00pm.
• Demonstrated ability to provide individualized and group instruction to non-traditional students.
• Demonstrated experience in curriculum development.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning processes, including providing distance learning opportunities for students.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching style and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
• Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office 365 applications and virtual meeting technology (e.g., Zoom, Teams, and GoToMeeting).
• Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and team-teach, if necessary.
• The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty and staff.


• Appropriate licensure and/or credentials, such as but not limited to: Master in TESOL/ESL, ESL endorsement in a public-school setting, Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), EFL or other credential related to teaching adult ESOL.
• BEST Plus Certification.
• Demonstrated ability to design and/or utilize blended learning models.
• Experience teaching in adult basic education.
• Demonstrated experience in curriculum development for ESOL and/or customization.
• Robust understanding and demonstrated inclusion of access, equity and student success practices.
• Ability to speak a language in addition to English.

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, grant-funded, non-unit, non-benefitted position.

Career and Technical Instructors are part-time instructors hired on an as needed basis. Courses may be offered in online, hybrid, or face-to-face modalities at Bristol’s locations in Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton, or at the client’s site. Courses may be held during the day, in the evening, and on weekends, but typically are held during weekday business hours from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
