Job Description:


POSITION TITLE: Writing Center Fellow (temporary, up to one year) – INTERNAL POSTING


DEPARTMENT: Library Learning Commons


REPORTS TO: Associate Dean, Library Learning Commons


STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Writing Center Fellow is responsible for coordinating the college’s Writing Center as part of the Library Learning Commons (LLC), including, but not limited to, the assessment of needs, as well as the design, implementation, and assessment of programs and services to improve the retention and academic success of all students. The Fellow assists in the development of program policies/procedures as well as recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising tutoring staff. In consultation with faculty, professional staff, and administrators, the Fellow will enable the provision of comprehensive writing and reading support at all Bristol locations, ensuring a diverse range of students are served.




• Participate in shaping the vision of the Writing Center in the context of the Library Learning Commons model and institutional priorities, which may include but is not limited to:


• Assessment of all student writing needs (e.g. needs for tutoring, writing tools, and other themes).

• Collaboration and consultation with staff, faculty and student leaders across the college on program/planning issues to shape the vision of the services.

• Promotion of services via participation in student and new faculty orientations, conducting class visits, visiting academic area or department meetings, and collaborating on instruction with the Library Learning Commons staff.

• Identification and development of emerging trends, best practices, and research results related to student success issues; share knowledge within and outside the college community.

• Facilitation of advisory board meetings to ensure collaborative leadership.


• Coordinate Writing Center programs, tutoring activities, and services at all Bristol locations, including both face-to-face and online tutoring, which may include but is not limited to:


• Communicating with Professional Tutor who is responsible for assignment of asynchronous paper reviews.

• Assigning tutors to all sections of ENG courses as requested by faculty.

• Overseeing the embedded writing tutoring program, including assigning tutors to all sections of ENG 091.

• Recruiting, hiring, scheduling, observing and supporting Writing Center Peer and Professional Tutors to assist students in college courses.

• Designing, implementing and assessing ongoing tutor training; collaborating with the Learning Commons team in regard to certifications and awards for tutors aligned with training.

• Collecting, analyzing, and reporting usage data gathered from relevant software platforms.

• As needed, tutoring students at any Bristol location and serving as online embedded writing tutor.

• Collaborating with Site Coordinators to ensure the implementation of policies and procedures by Writing Center tutors.

• Coordinating marketing and communications for Writing Center programs and services.

• Assisting with budget planning.

• Approving time for all Writing Center Peer Tutors. Provide accurate time estimates for Writing Center Professional Tutors to appropriate time approver.

• Facilitating monthly Writing Center staff meetings.


• Contribute to the mission of the Library Learning Commons, through duties such as, but not limited to:


• Collaborating with the LLC staff in the vision, operation and growth of the LLC models to provide academic support across all college locations with a diversity, equity, and inclusion focus to high school, traditional, and adult students.

• Participate in assessment of programs and services.

• Participate in Library Learning Commons meetings.

• Prepare reports as requested.






• Must be a current Bristol adjunct faculty member to be considered for this position.

• Minimum of a Master’s degree in related field.

• Background in teaching writing skills.

• Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.




• Experience coordinating college programming.

• Experience with Bristol’s Writing Center’s services within the last three years.

POSITION STATUS: This is an MCCC/MTA, part time, non-benefitted, up to 18.5 hours per week unit position. This position will be for a period of up to one year (including summer and limited work during intersessions), expected to conclude at the end of Spring 2023 or Summer 2023, as circumstances dictate.


COMPENSATION: $40 per hour.
